STRESS!!!  My life is filled with it.  My guess is you can relate, can’t you?

When you get stressed, our stress hormone, cortisol, is released from your adrenal glands.  This is a natural “fight or flight” response that gives you a quick burst of energy for survival and then returns back to its normal state.  Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen too much in our society – it becomes a long-term reaction. It becomes chronic.

Did you know that too-high levels of cortisol are associated with belly fat, poor sleep, brain fog, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and even lowers your immunity?

If you suffer from constant stress, here are some recommendations to help you lower the stress hormone naturally!

Nutrition Tips

Sugar is one of the biggest contributors that increases your cortisol.  Reducing the sugar we eat and drink can be a great step toward better health for our minds (and bodies).

High doses of caffeine also increase your cortisol levels. If coffee makes you feel anxious and jittery, then cut back on the amount of caffeine you ingest.

Dehydration increases cortisol. Be sure to drink half your weight in ounces per pound of body weight.   For example, if you weigh 140 pounds, you should be drinking 70 ounces of water a day.

Eat a variety of nutrient-dense whole foods; this doesn’t just help reduce stress hormone, it helps all aspects of your health.

 Lifestyle Tips

Get enough sleep!   Sleep reduces cortisol levels and also helps improve your overall health in so many ways.

Move or exercise.  While intense exercise increases cortisol levels temporarily, it can reduce overall cortisol levels.

Practice mindfulness. The practice helps you become more aware of your thoughts and, in doing so, you can step back from stressful thoughts and worries before they begin.

Relax and have fun. Massages, deep breathing, and listening to relaxing music all reduce cortisol.

Get involved with friends.  By increasing social activity, you decrease loneliness. Surround yourself with healthy, happy people, and their positive energy will affect you in a positive way!
